I picked up my eggs at the post office today, so it's for reals now. Narragannaresstte - someday I will get that right; I have been noticing newscasters saying it lately, don't recall why, but I'm old, okay?

I have a surfeit of Tutor eggs available from my own flock. No fancy, schmancy, Penendenenendencario or Impressiveority or any true pure-blooded eggs laid at the Olmstead Homestead - miscegenation is the methodology here.

That is, of course, unless I can be persuaded to consider eggs from another source. I only have one Cochin in the flock.... Lola could use some younger sisters, perhaps. Hmmm. Wouldn't that be a hoot: fluffy Cochin Tutors to Narranananagansette poults?

I wish I could help, I have 2 bantam Cochins, but one is broody.

Btw, in my bantam pen it is going to be lots of fun, silkies, cochins, and frizzles, all in misc colors and patterns. I just hatched my first showgirl from shipped eggs and I soooooo want it to be a boy.

Yep! But I have moved so I am safe. Whew!!!!

I will be setting more of my Violet Laced Wyandottes, and probably some Alohas.

Oh, violet laced wyandottes sound lovely. I've recently become sort of a wyandotte junky and I'm setting BLRs as my tutors

I've never had one improve after day 10 if it's showing clear at that date... then again I have a nice bright light that I candle with.. so I can see a heck of a lot of what's going on in there!

I usually don't even candle until about day 14, but I have too many eggs in my 3 bators. I usually candle at lockdown or when I run out of space for more eggs.

Do they need to have hatched at the same time or can they be older. I have no idea why I am asking that, because we all know I will be setting more.

You had it at one time, but I hope you have lost it.

Besides, I look much prettier in my imaginary one.

A few days to a week older works really well but you can have them hatch all at the same time too. The turkeys will out grow the chicks quickly & really only need them as tutors for about 3-4 days to show them how to eat & drink.

Yup--I have 3 hens now with a small batch in the 'bator!! Shhhh-DH doesn't know about the eggs in the incubator.

Brooder is the same as chickens, same type waterer too?

And is there a turkey starter I need? medicated and what if there are chicks with them? what do I do food wise then?

They can brood together for about a week before the poults will outgrow the chicks & begin to trample them if there are too many poults. I always feed non-medicated & I actually feed a mix of gamebird/meatbird & starter grower when I have poults, quail or meaties in the mix. It gives my layers a little boost without slowing my "big" birds down too much.

turkeys do best on game bird starter or turkey starter if you can find it (both have higher protein than chick starter)... the game bird starter won't hurt chicks for being on it while in the brooder.. but i wouldnt keep them on it long term (causes them to grow faster and long term can put a strain on their liver)

turkeys can be on regular chick starter.. but they won't get all the nutrition they need so they will grow slower.. and many chick starters lack the niacin that turkeys need.. so if you go with chick starter add some niacin to the water to help avoid leg and joint issues in the poults.

I try not to use medicated feed for any of my birds.. but some times that's all that's available. It won't hurt them.. I just prefer to stay away from medicated feeds.

I have quite a bit of "poultry starter" (24% protein, non-medicated), is that ok? what kind of protein should I be looking for as far as turkeys go?

My RP turkey hen threw a wrench in the works today. I only have the one pair so thought I'd be doing well to save up 8 eggs by Sunday, since she only lays about every other day so even then, the oldest eggs are a couple of weeks old. But, after laying only 12 eggs total, she went broody today. Actually, I guess I will still do the hatchalong but I'll set the eggs under the hen instead of in the incubator like I had planned. I set 4 eggs two weeks ago so I have 8 to give her on Sunday morning. I moved her tonight from the broody nest she was sharing with a muscovy duck and a silkie, to her own doghouse in the hoop coop I built just for this purpose.

Oh well, I guess this frees up my incubator so I can fill it with muscovy eggs and hatch those instead.

I was thinking about trying to hatch some black frizzle cochin to add to my cochin pen. I like the cochin frizzles.
You have a very real chance of hatching a frizzle or two from those eggs you got from me. 4 boys in the run, the eldest (albeit Beta) is a frizzle.

I've got banties if that's what you're wanting. Blue, Black, Splash, Mottled (soon Chocolate).


It lost half my multis. Sally, you've got some of those banty Cochins and the turkey eggs are potentially pure, potentially mutt, but all are heritage. There's a Bourbon Red tom and a Royal Palm tom over 2 Bourbon Reds, a Holland White, a Bronze, a Slate, and a Royal Palm. I don't think Rhett ever lets Carmine get near Scarlett and Ruby, and I don't think Carmine ever lets Rhett get near Shirley, so there's a good chance you'll get pure Reds or Palms, assuming you got some of their eggs...who knows?? They'll be nice, friendly birds, either way.

I'm still waiting for the peas to start laying so I can get those going. I don't have a house for them this year because they quit using it, so I gave it to the turkeys. Without it, though, they haven't a home base for laying and since the turkeys are laying in their house I'm not sure where the peas will lay...and I can't follow them around all spring. There are a million places they could hide their eggs. This could be very difficult.

If anyone is interested in joining in late, I could send eggs next week...I'm getting 4-6 a day from my turkeys. Yesterday I got a cute little one the size of a chicken egg!

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. Did you just mention peacock eggs, maybe my restraints just came lose, but are these eggs something that can be shipped?
