**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

Hi everyone, I just managed to get caught up. I set a dozen Iowa Blue turkey tutors and did a quick candle. I expect lots of probable clears in my eggs, but won't clear anything out until 14 days. I beleive I see development in all 6 of Arielle's eggs though, so that's good! really hoping for some sweetgrass.

Due to an unfortunate series of events, I have not candled in 48 hours.

the microwave treatment is for drying.. I dont bother with it since I rinse with oxine then let air dry

Here's something funny for everyone. I went out to get some pics of my American Games and I noticed that my horse was acting nuts. Not so unusual, but sometimes he has a reason. I looked up after taking a few pics and there she was. The earless cow that lives with one neighbor and belongs to my best friend.

She was rescued from the Stockyard. She was born during an auction a few years ago.

The standoff

The Earless One herself

Awwwe She's adorable. poor horse, such a traumatic experience LOL

He HATES cows that get in his field. But then, StarBuck is a mustang.
She's so beautiful. Is Starbuck a BLM? I got a BLM Mustang a couple years ago. Only paid $150, but she was an amazing horse! But I eventually had to sell her because she was prone to colic no matter what we did & the vet bills were running me into the poorhouse. But She got a great home! However, before she moved on to her new home, she left me a "souvenir"

We call him The Copper Cobra...Cobra for short. He will be 2 in Oct. Funny thing about the whole ordeal...She colicked in Aug that year & 2 different vets both had their arms inside her up to their shoulder & neither felt the baby (who would have been 9 months gestating already). When I bought Brandi in Apr, I didn't know she was preggars. I had 2 other mares foal that year which brought my horse total up to SEVEN!!! All the babies were boys! I kept the colt in the 1st pic below & now he has turned into a beautiful black stallion!

I've been on Work Comp since Oct last year & got my horse total down to 4 now. I sell my eggs to pay for chook food, so that works out. My neighbor keeps my horses for me & he buys the food, while I help out with some chores & other things. Nothing strenuous since I have a back injury. I really miss riding, but I will again in the near future (I hope). In the meantime, the horses get lots of turn out for exercise. :)

You never just toss eggs. If nothing else cook them and feed them back. The protein is good for them, they like it and it cuts back on your feed bill.

My girls LOVE LOVE LOVE scrambled eggs!!! I pulverize the shells & mix them in. Sometimes I add buttermilk as a probiotic. I bring scrambled eggs out & literally get attacked by a flock of feather butts! They jump at me! My barred rock has even bitten me when I don't get it down fast enough.

Crazy chooks!!

I thought it was pretty funny too...but hey, I have 4 kids 6 and under so it's not that far fetched! lol!

Hola, everyone!!

I have a numb butt from sitting on a cold cement floor in our basement long enough to candle a zillion eggs. 293 are left, with 11 more pipped (manually).

Remember that 112* overnight sadness I had back the day before the Easter Hatch? Well, I lost all of the Easter Hatch except 3, which the broody promptly killed (sooooo sad!!). I had ser about 250 (iirc) a few days before that spike and waited to candle, finally confirming losses in all but about 3 dozen. From those are the 11 that are pipped today. They are all bound to struggle after having gone through all of that, and I pipped all of the 36 to see where we stood. Most were gone, but 8 of the 11 were internally pipped, though in improper position to pip externally. I opened the very top of the egg to view each. Three were improperly positioned and of those, one was drawing back it's blood supply, so I went ahead and found its beak and cleared it of the membrane. It looks good, but hasn't begun to absorb the yolk yet, so we'll see. It would have been a goner, for certain if I hadn't helped, and in this case I've made an exception. If the incubation had gone normally, I wouldn't have helped, but this is not the usual scenario.

Now they're in there soaking up their yolks and the other 2 non-pipped have bright red, healthy veining, so I'll let them go a while. I hate this, but I'd hate to have a complete loss, as well. It looks like 2 Mauve Ameraucanas, 2 Lemon Cuckoo Orps, an Isabel Orp, a Chocolate Marans and a few others...so we'll see.

In the CdM set, I pulled a couple dozen turkeys (infertile early eggs from first year girls) and somehow still have 3 dozen. What am I going to do with that many turkeys?? I have a few dozen FBCM, Choco Ameraucanas, South Americans, a handful of Chanteclers, a dozen Konzas, and a bunch of Chocolate Orps...oh, and some banty Cochins.

I'll be setting up a roadside stand to get rid of all of these!!! Sheesh
And where will this roadside stand happen to be???? (Just out of sheer curiousity of course and not because I love banty cochins or anything.) lol

Sooooo...sad face! My temp spiked to 106 today. :( I'm hoping for the best...is there any chance they might survive?

I had a temp spike to 116F a couple hatches ago & had chicks survive. The spike to 120F the next hatch killed the whole batch though.

I think he is since he has the brand. I ended up getting him from an old friend for $100 and he was pretty close to death. I rode him for 4 years before that and fell in love as soon as I saw him. I used to ride him a lot, but after awhile I decided that deserved to be retired and not have to worry about anyone really bothering him. Except for my daily attempt at petting him.

He's 22 and an ornery old man. I love him to death, but some days he's exasperating.
