**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

lol.. I incubate my ducks and geese dry... I've even had the darn things develop on my kitchen counter during the summer with 0 incubator assistance.

(it gets hot here)
so yeah.. it really does depend on the incubator setup.. which is why I said to see which way works best for them
Ummmm...yep, I'd say it gets hot there if they are developing on the kitchen counter.

With all this talk about ducks maybe someone can answer a few duck hatching questions I have. I have some due to hatch today. I had good hatches before from this ladies eggs, but lately not so much. A lot of clears and early deaths. So I started with 18 and when put into lockdown only had 8 left. They strange thing is out of the eggs about half have normal size air cells and the other half have very small ones. I duckling didn't turn and pipped the wrong end (which was going to be my sons duckling). 2 piped about the middle of the eggs and not into the air cell (they had small cells). Some look like they died, and some pipped where they should and have nice looking air cells. Any thoughts on what happened?

Never mind. I opened up the ones that didn't make it and they were all shrink wrapped. Things have been busy around here lately and I haven't been paying enough attenion to the humidity.

Sounds like you may have had some eggs that were more porous than others that lost moisture faster. Maybe let her know so if the porous ones are all coming from the same pen she can supplement some extra calcium.

The ducks she has all free range. I don't think I will be getting anymore from her due to all the clear, early deaths in the eggs. I have some mixed ducklings due in another week from someone else so I will see how those do.

If you still don't have any luck, let me know & maybe we can do a swap to get you some of my duck eggs. I have pekins, runners & calls laying & the scovies should start any time.

Thanks! I would love to try call duck eggs. I think it just might be the eggs maybe. The last time I tried hatching her eggs I started with 3 dozen and only hatched 2 ducklings. I have had a really good hatch with her eggs before, but not lately (and at that time she said she was having bad hatches) As I wrote this 1 that had a normal air cell hatched out. I don't understand if they were dry, why where the air cells so small?

I'd say it's the difference in the porousness of the shell. I'd say she has some not getting enough calcium & probably other nutrients as well if you are getting a lot of clears & early deaths. Poor nutrition can have a huge effect on hatchability of the eggs. Sounds like she needs to supplement some layer feed into their diets because they aren't finding what they need on free range.
