Normal for ducklings to make a smallish, chicken-sized pip, then enlarge it to a huge pip, or am I seeing bad zipping?

Dagnabbit! Hatcher failed on me and I didn't notice this morning. Chilled eggs and chicks, and TURKEY eggs are in the incubator to finish hatching.

Fan was working, thermostats are working, it seems like it is the heating element. Grrrrrrrr! My MrHeinz Wellie eggs were hatching. Sheesh!

Nothing I can do now but hope for the best.

Dang - that happened to me on one hatch too - the heating element partially stopped working and the temp dropped to in the 80's. The chicks made it out fine - I guess by then they are able to generate enough of their own heat - and then I grabbed them pretty quickly and put them in the brooder. I also had a hatch recently where after 2 had hatched and a bunch more were pipped, we had a power outage that lasted several hours. I was a bit panicky, but the temp stabilized pretty quickly after the power came back on and every egg in there hatched either during the outage or soon after. I'll

yours do okay. Of course it would happen in the middle of a winter storm (in May!) wouldn't it?

I found nothing but a bunch of ads for BCM and Silver Phoenix chicks. Oh, and an ad from someone that apparently knows nothing about BRs and Doms. Maybe next week.

I know, and they are in my shed that is insulated but the only heat is from the brooders and the incubators. I didn't even check the temp in the hatcher. I did not want to know.

I had something similiar happen, but it was my fault. I was candling all the eggs and forgot to put the turkey eggs back in the incubator. 2 eggs quit during that time and only 2 are looking like they are going to hatch. I was so mad at my self for doing something so stupid. These poor turkey eggs have had a poor time because of me. A week ago when I was moving chicken eggs around that were going to hatch I did something else stupid. I put the tray with the turkey eggs on top (stacking trays). I thought to my self that I should put it on the bottom with a heavier tray on top but didn't listen to myself and put it on top. I turned the turner on and as soon as it turned them the tray flipped over and 3 eggs fell to the floor and landed on the bar of the turner. They were badly cracked but 2 were still moving. I tried waxing them but the didn't make it.

Question for those of you that hatch with a brinsea eco 20. I have found that when I hatch the chicks in an egg cartoon, upright, same way they were set that I get a much better hatch rate. But have any of you tried just leaving the rails in while they hatch? I'm just wondering cause since it is such a small bator that sometimes I can't fit enough egg cartons in ttheir to hold all the eggs.

I almost did. I left them in for lockdown & had every intention of leaving them for hatch, but then the day before, I looked at it & must have thought I forgot & took them out very quickly. Later that night, I saw the first pips. It should be fine to leave the rails in. As a matter of fact, I had so many eggs in at the start, that I had to take the rails out & honeycomb the eggs to fit them all in. Even had a few stacked. Then as I removed clears & quitters, found some room to add the rails.
