Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone can offer us ideas on what might be passing through our flock. One of our chickens recently died after having psymptoms of diareah that got all over her back feathers. She wasn't able to stay clean and just started to become lethargic, isolate herself, stop eating or drinking and eventually passed away. Now another chicken is showing the early signs of the same thing. She has diahrea, isn't able to clean herself. She is very lethargic and not wanting to move around a lot. We are concerned that she will get worse and die as well. MOst concerning is the interest in finding out what it is and what we might do to change the course of the whole flock getting sick.

Any ideas of what this might be and what we might do. We had five chickens, one died and we got two more and one is now sick

thanks very much
Michael

Sounds like it could be worms. There are other conditions that have diarrhea as a sign too, however.

I'd deworm them if it were me.

I am assuming these are layers. There are no wormers on the market approved for layers. So if you deworm them it would be off-label and you would want to toss eggs for at least a couple of weeks.

There are vast numbers of threads dealing with off-label worming. If you need to, you can always search byc for more information. But please do ask if you need assistance.

Some vets will do a fecal test for worms for a small fee (false negatives are possible though). There are several kinds of worms, and not all wormers work for all the types.
