second guessing my brooder choice

I didn't realize your were raising quail. That changes EVERYTHING I told you.......Just kidding!! It'll be a fun family project. Your daughter is going to love it. I can't wait for you to graduate to chickens. They have so much personality!! Enjoy your adventure!!
Good grief!!!!! I started to read your response & thought OMG I posted in the wrong place...

LOL!!!! PHEW!!! I have sinced moved it out of the kennel as it wasn't warm enough. I am now able to keep temps 95 with cool half too...yay!!! Now watching an egg to hatch is like watching water boil ... I will never sleep! What kind of chickens do you have?

I have used a hard plastic tote my husband has for his work, a rubber maid tote, a huge wooden brooder, large cardboard boxes, and my favorite is those wire puppy enclosures..you can make them any size and they are just so awesome. Once the birds get all their feathers it's a little rough trying to cover the top so the chickens don't escape, but it's big and open. I did cover the bottom few inches with cardboard so the chicks couldn't scratch out their bedding all over

Like Missnu stated, a large cardboard box will do fine. Initially, it should be big enough to hold the water, the food and give the quail enough space to move away from the heated area when they get too hot. If you feel you need to get a bigger box after the first week, then you will have time to search for a bigger box. Once you move the chicks to the bigger box, you can cut the smaller box up and toss it into the recycle bin (cutting it will prevent somebody else from taking it and trying to use it).

Don't forget... pics of those chicks!!!

Good luck!!!

We have Buff Orpingtons. They are a GREAT breed for family pets. Very sweet, docile, good and with kids. I did a review on them that you can see here. They are definitely our "pets".
