It does look normal -- for incubating eggs laying down. As they develop, the growth naturally rises to the side that is upward. Actually, if you candled while they were being turned, you can actually watch it float from the bottom side, back to the top side.

This was half way thru hand turning.

It only progressively got more of an actual blood ring unfortunately :( and then it stopped moving altogether

Yes, that does look like a blood ring now. I'm sorry it quit. I was just making the point that development on one side is normal for the first week or so.
