Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a while (GREAT info, great forum).

After a lifetime of wanting a more pastoral life, I was finally able to make it a reality last year when we bought 5 acres in unincorporated SW Illinois. As far as I'm concerned, I'm living the dream (along with my 6 hens, 1 rooster, 8 ducks, 1 spoiled Jersey heifer, 2 spoiled holstein/jersey bottle calves and one VERY supportive husband.........).

We do meat birds a few times a year for our own consumption, but the birds I get the most joy out of are definitely our layers: Jemima (Ameraucana or EE), Ginger (RIR), Bonnie (BA), 3 dixie rainbows that I can't tell apart , and our Light Brahma roo Leroy Jenkins. We have about 20 layer chicks in the brooder at the moment as I fell in love with Ameraucanas and decided I want ALL of the fluffy cheeked little monsters. So we will be building a bigger coop this year for sure, ha ha.

Here is Peeping Jemima, so named because she likes to perch on our bedroom windowsill and stare at us like a little creeper.

And here's a zoomed out shot of the whole crew on bug duty.

I'll be posting a different thread asking for help sexing some youngsters, but in the meantime, just wanted to say hallo. :frow

Welcome to BYC!
Tip: one year I bought 4 chicks of the same breed and could not tell them apart. I put a different colored dab of food coloring on each ones tail feathers. Worked great. Now i can recognize each one by personality. I still use the food coloring so that I can tell from a distance.
