yes, have your camera ready when those chicks appear! My 6 yr old really likes your pictures and the whole "story" She told it at dinner the other night!
I've had two broodies. If I had that area, I'd leave her. just watch and listen for peeps. I wouldn't move her unless it was necessary. Most likely all the eggs aren't hers. I had one who had 6, 4 were standards and she was a bantam. She hatched all but one. I have a Dominique who is brooding and I left her where she is. I'm tired these days and when and if they hatch, I''ll move her then. She's not a real friendly girl anyhow. She only has two eggs one of which I know is not hers. Are they fertile? Who cares. Whens the last time you heard of a hen dieing on a nest of eggs. Estimate how long you think she's been sitting and go from there. If she hasn't hatched them in 15-16 days I'd check on them. My hen hatched in sucession. When the last egg didnt hatch for about 5 days I tossed it. She had lost interest anyhow.
Yes she is in our garage with 32 eggs under her. Before I left for a business trip I moved her and she was content. My wife and kids have not said anything about her. I am assuming that she is still on the eggs and doing fine. I will check tomorrow though.
I am planning on candling in about a week to check on progress and to remove any undeveloped eggs. I will be relying on the information from this website for candling information so I just pray that it is accurate and clear.
Thanks all for your concerns and support.
Nursemeh - thanks for your comments about your 6 yr old. Tell her that I will definitely keep her updated and as soon as I get more info I will post it.
I forgot one last thing. They are definitely not all her eggs. There are blue/green eggs and brown eggs. I have a mix of 31 hens RIR, Black Sex Link, and EE, as well as, 2 RIR and 2 unknown white roosters. So there is no telling what the chicks might be. Which is fine with me since I am not breeding for any show quality or anything - just backyard flock of egg layers.
I don't know if you've seen this link but I'm going to post it just in case you haven't....it'll help out tremendously when you go to candle........thanks goes out to silkiechicken for making the thread!
we bought a round bale of hay for my horses and dear hubby found my hens have hollowed out a hole and have been laying eggs in it....I know its at least two hens because I get large brown eggs and small white eggs...
