Secret hiding place (picture heavy)

this is hillarious, sweet, and amazing all at the same time. she was sitting on all those eggs. what a mom! i bet she went around and collected all the eggs that were near her.
we have 1 buff orping ton who would do that, steall all the eggs around her and just sit. fertile, not fertile, white brown, she didnt care, she was going to sit on eggs as long as it took. eventually we had to stop it because no one was allowed to come near her eggs or she got NASTY. and not 1 was going to hatch. you couldnt even look like you were coming near her or you would regret it. but she never had more than 8 under her. so kudos to your chikn mamma, she is dedicated to say the least. she will be the one to stick abandoned eggs under in the future! im going to follow this and im hoping they all hatch! i guess only the lord knows for sure!

I am glad that the move went successfully, I moved one last year, and she seemed happy, but then two days later, she went back to her original nest, and I lost the clutch. However, she stayed broody, so when the 3 weeks were up, at night I slipped some day old chicks under her, I just stuck them on her back, and after I got all 6 in there, I was going to lift the hen up so the chicks could get under her, but they just disappeared underneath her. She was one happy mother the next day, had gotten them all out of a nest that was 3 feet off the ground, created a new nest on the ground in the corner, and was.....well as happy as a hen with chicks!

They were the cutest thing all spring. I am hoping that one of my girls will do this broody thing this spring, cause really it is the best way to raise chicks. mk

Let's throw her a chick-shower. I'll bring the ...grit??

Thats great news about putting the chicks under her,I had asked that question because I have a silkie that will go broody and was wondering about ordering chicks to put under her so I could have some differant breeds as I do not have an incubator.Moms do much better jobs that I can

Just wanted to update those of you that are following this thread. When I got home from my business trip last week, momma had tossed one egg out of the box. It had a small hole plucked into it so I figured she decided that was not doing anything.

I did try to candle but some looked like there was something, others looked like a "blob" floating to the top, and still others that I could not see a darn thing into. So my thought is to let her keep sitting on what is still in there and let her decide. Oh one more thing - I did find an unmarked egg in the bunch. Either I missed it when I was counting or another hen layed an egg around her before I had the chance to move her into the garage.

I did just check on her and found a piece of egg shell sitting outside of the nest with what looked like dried yolk inside. Not sure what that could be maybe she tossed another one and something ate a piece of it. There might be some mice in the garage.

Also I caught her off the eggs yesterday and took a couple of pics. She hurried back onto the eggs once she noticed me coming in to check things out. Here you go.

Here she is off the eggs.

Now she is settling back onto the nest.

She can barely cover all of these eggs. She does eventually spread out to cover the ones you see exposed.
