ive had the coop two weeks and I don't think you need to make a huge time and money investment in getting plans for a diy coop as well as purchasing tools and materials if you don't already have them on hand. I live in the south with very few changes in seasons. No snow, a couple cold nights in the winter but that's it. The coop is in a heavily shaded area as the summer is hot. For me the coop works for right now. If you're a novice like I am modifying a version of this is a good idea. The coop is sturdy, far more sturdy than others I saw. It had good reviews on multiple sites as well. It does need to be reinforced but that can be done with wood and a drill or even an electric screw driver. Nothing too major. There isn't wire fencing on the bottom so the birds are not walking on that.
You can definitely try your hand at chickens without a three week construction project. Maybe try less birds though.
