I found out today while I was in bird-lab that Temple Grandin will be speaking at a nearby college tonight. I am so excited that I found out in time to attend! Since she had such a profound effect on livestock handling in this country, I thought I'd share this with BYC, and see if anyone here has ever been to one of her talks, or read her books, or anything.

When I get back, I'll share what was discussed. I don't know if she'll be talking about autism or animal handling, or both. Either way, I'm psyched.

I heard her speak about a month ago about animal welfare. She is a very engaging public speaker. At this event, she spent a great deal of time interacting with the crowd during breaks, was happy to have her picture taken multiple times and signed many books. It will be a great evening!

I've read Animals in Translation and watched the biography HBO did about her. I have Asperger's which is an autism spectrum disorder so I can relate to how she thinks. It is amazing that she has overcome so much considering she grew up in the 60's and 70's and went into a field that is still so male dominated.

Well, if anyone's interested, I'm planning to bring my laptop tonight to take notes just for myself. As of right now, I'm leaning heavily toward working with autistic children as a specialty in clinical psychology, and I've been following her ever since I first read Animals in Translation. I'd be more than happy to forward on anything I type to anyone who is interested. If you are, just PM me.

Her movie is near the top of my Netflix list. Will probably be seeing it next week. (Hubby and I have to finish season 1 of Fringe first

Let us know how it goes - very interested myself. I sub in ECSE rooms and deal with autistic kids all the time - very interesting field.

The movie was awesome, and I'm waiting for her books through the book rental service I use. She'd be amazing to meet. She endured so much, and has made so many improvements in how we handle animals and feedlots.

She is truly awesome and has revolutionized the handling of slaughter house animals. I'm betting that you are in for a very interesting evening.

I'm here. The reception hall was filled to max two hours before she started. So I'm in an also-filled-to-max dining hall, where there is a live feed. I've given up on trying to type as she talks, because it's just too fast to take down. I was told that this will probably be uploaded on the school website, so when I find that, I'll pass it along (if I can). Oh, and btw, there are protesters outside because she works for the livestock industry. She addressed those protesters by saying "none of these animals would even exist if they weren't going to become food" and that nature is far more cruel than we need to be, and that the cattle she sees lead calm lives. Everything has to die, but only humans can make those lives comfortable -- if we want to. She's awesome.

:)
