I’ve been trying to build up my flock (2 full grown hens, 2 teenaged pullets) so I got some speckled sussex chicks at around 5 weeks old at the farm store. I didn’t even have them for 48 hours before there was an accident with a hawk who somehow got ahold on one of them through the cage (she must have been right up against the side) while I was preparing to move them inside for the night and that chick was killed. I’ve never seen a hawk in our yard before yesterday but obviously the surviving chick lives inside full time now. Today I went back to the farm store but they had sold out of all chicks around her age and only had newborns. I’m worried about leaving her alone for too long so now I’m desperate to find her a friend. If anybody has a healthy chick around 5 weeks old to spare, I am in Mendocino county but I am willing to travel this week to find a companion
Pic attached (she really looks like a cockerel but my older sussex had this same kind of comb development and turned out to be a hen so I’m holding out hope)
