Seeking Experienced Eating-Egg Sellers Advice!!!

I'm trying to save up for a study abroad program's tuition. Im thinking of selling my 5 chickens' eggs in addition to getting a job. I want to sell the eggs because it's just a little extra for gas money and such. Selling one and a half dozen a week (im in a family of five, we like to eat eggs, hence selling one and one half dozen instead of 2 and one hald dozen), how much could i make in a year? I know most people sell their eggs at 1.50 per dozen, and i was thinking about making that my cost too. help please?

C'mon now. You can't be serious about making money selling eggs can you. With only 5 chickens your cost per egg will be much much greater than you could recoup. And where can you buy eggs at 1.50 a dozen anymore. Free range chicken eggs in a San Diego farmers market....$6 a dozen. Free range chicken eggs at Win Dixie in Gulfport Ms, $4.69 dozen. So If you are going to sell eggs "Don't Sell Yourself Short". Even at these prices there is a lot to consider. You can make a profit but you would need to think bigger.

These are just an opinion of an unknown chicken keeper in Lyman Ms.

Even if you were to sell them for $2 a dozen it would only be $3 a week or $12 a month. That would be enough profit to buy a bag of chicken food each month, which means you would break even if you only go through one bag a month (approx for 5 chickens).

Chicken feed here in Gulfport is $19 a bag for crumbles at Fazzios. You can get Dumor at TSC for $17 & change. So it will be difficult to be profitable. I'm not sayin it can't be done. But it will be very difficult on such a small scale.

Plus I personally eat about 18 eggs a week just myself not including the rest of the family. All my neighbors & friends always want eggs.

Hi. I agree with the others in that the farmers market where I live want $4 a dozen for fresh eggs. How do you keep your birds? If they are not confined in a cage all day long then you may use the words cage free, or if they can run free part of the day( eating grass , sunning) you can use the words free range. These are terms that will help you. Never, sell for $1.50 a dozen. It won't be enough to cover cost of feed even if you have access to a supermarkets unused produce. Find out (by just talking to others) who will appreciate the fresh eggs. Some of the older generation will be more than glad to buy the eggs at your price, and, some will be cranky about the price. As with the younger generation, who like to do the "green thing" and by local. Either way who ever complains just take it as a grain of salt, you don't need complainers you want those who appreciate. Go to Walmart or what ever big brand store is around you and look (or better yet take a picture( and see what their eggs sell for. Like cage free and free range. Also, tell them from your experience what your eggs look like and taste like compared to store eggs. The cheap eggs are chickens that are caged all their life. And breathe terrible ammonium gasses from waste products and overcrowding. Let people know that your eggs taste better than the stores because you give them left over tomatos, watemelons, apples, etc. Take a picture of your cracked egg next to the cheap store egg. You will see a difference ,then they can too. Finally, you can use your calendar and write at the top your feed cost for the month, and as every day goes by write down how many eggs you get till you get to the end of the month . Add up the eggs compare to the feed cost and factor in that you would like to make a little money. Remember, we don't pay 75 cents a gallon for gas anymore , bread isn't 25 cents a loaf, and corn isn't $2 a bushel anymore, so, why should us people that sell eggs have to sell for what someone thinks we should. Just because they remember what they used to pay for them. I hope this helps.

I keep my chickens as pets and consider the eggs to be a bonus. I just give my eggs to friends and family. If you feel the same and would keep your chickens regardless of whether you sell eggs or not, then it does not matter if you break even, any money you make for selling the eggs would be a bonus. I do think you should try to sell them for more than $1.50. You might start higher and come down if your market won't bear the higher cost. Around here eggs do not go for much because so many people have chickens. Good luck with your plans to study abroad.
