Hello follow bird lovers! My husband and I have a small flock of about 30 birds all together. We raise chickens, ducks and turkeys right now!
Monday (today is Saturday) my 11 week old male mallard duck Maui started with seizures. It was 95 degrees Monday and that evening we noticed Maui flapping around and acting strange but everyone else was fine and I kinda just brushed it off. They have access to a pool 24/7 and have many waterers available in their run as well as shade. We should of brought Maui in that night but honestly I didn’t realize how seriously ill he was until the next day when I saw him actually seizure. We got him to the vet Tuesday and she did bloodwork and a parasite test, both came back PERFECT and no sign of hardware disease either. He had a temp if 108 at the vet and was open mouth breathing pretty heavily at this point so since Tuesday’s he has become a house duck. The vet gave us Baytril .25ml once daily for 7 days and Meloxicam .6ml every other day for 6 days. He’s still having seizures some are really bad and some only last a few seconds but my concern now is he has hardly eaten in days but is drinking and I think he is having some depression being away from his flock. I suggested phenobarbital to my vet and she said she has never used it in a duck before but would do some research to see if it was safe and find out a dose for him. I’m at a lose here. I don’t want him to suffer but I always want to try everything I can to save him. Here’s a picture of his lab results as well as a cute picture of Maui.
