Self Blue Banty Cochin Pullet, "Shadow" @ 18 Wks(Now 29 Wks-new pic)..

I am trying to remember when she started laying. I was right around 5 months. I know, because I am nuts and actually keep records of egg counts from each house each day. July 26, I got 4 eggs, which means Dusty along with the 3 Silkies laid an egg. Dusty was born 2/27/2008. She has stopped now (cold here). But her egg is typically larger than the Silkie eggs. My Blue and Splash cochin hens from (HatTrickSilkies), just started laying in the last week or so, they were about 22 weeks.

Your Dusty started laying early. Thank you for all the information. I wondered what size egg I could expect from my Shadow. Figured when I found that jelly-bean size pullet egg, that would be hers, LOL. Guess you got my PM so you know I have a Dusty, too, but she's one of my promising Blue Orpington girls.

Cyn,

This is not my Dusty's egg, but this is a picture of some eggs from today. The smaller egg on the right, is from one of my Cochin Bantam pullets that just started laying last week. Her egg is comparable to what Dusty laid her first time. The large egg on the left is from one of my Production Red and is Jumbo according to my egg scale. The egg in the middle is from one of my standard pullets, it could be a sex-link, jersey giant or a wyandotte.

But for sure, the cochin bantam egg is bigger than a Jelly Bean.

Shadow has really grown up to be a nice looking little pullet. She does need a cockerel to go with though.

I will donate some eggs if you want to try for some blues or blacks.

They would all be blue (some may be black and splash, not sure) but they all would carry the Self Blue gene so bred back to shadow you should get some Self Blue babies. How ever the best color to breed her to would be black and not blue to produce more self blue or you could get a self blue roo and get all self blue offspring.

Wow, an old thread revived! Kris, thank you so much for the egg offer. With my broken ankle, Tom has enough on his plate without having to build a separate coop, but he adores Shadow so much, he may just want that in the future. She is over 8months old now and though no eggs yet, her comb has just now gotten bright red and enlarged. I think eggs are not far now.
