Self-Blue Cochin Bantams

Marie,
I didn't see a link to the photos.

I'll wait to see the pics but if you bred two Self Blue birds together you shouldn't have gotten a black out of them.

type is always the first thing to work on when trying to improve a breed/variety. you could have the best colored bird in the world but if doesn't carry the appropriate breed traits it's just a nice colored bird.

The f3 generation has begun. The first Self-Blue split to Black chicks hatched yesterday. Only 2, but 100% hatch from 2 eggs. The numbers increase over the next few weeks. I have 2 pullets laying and a third getting ready to lay. The first bunch will all be Black X Self-Blue. I won't hatch any Self-Blue X Black until later in the spring after I've gotten out all the Blacks that I want. Goal is to have about 50 splits to choose from for the f4 generation. Any blue legged birds will be culled so that none are used for the f4 breeding. I am using a couple with Blue legs for the f3's because they happen to be the better typed birds, and with this project type is the key.

So far leg color looks good. Both chicks look exactly like Black Cochin Bantam chicks.

I am not an expert by any means... but I think they're more splash.
I think the one in the back looks more hen than the one in front.

Don't shoot me but I bought them on impulse from a garden center as week old chicks. They were labeled as being Porcelaine, which I took to be lavender. The shop had a pair of lavender adults and I think the shop have been incubating and hatching out eggs. (They also had Polish, Houdans and Silkies). Therefore their pedigree is suspect but I really don't care because they are gorgeous and healthy to boot

I absolutely adore these chicks. They are friendly, cuddly, beautiful and funny in equal measure. I hope at this point that they are pullets and then I can go on the hunt for a nice roo later on

The third chick in the pic is one of my (home hatched) 7 week old Faverolle X Marans
