Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

So sorry to be late in posting but we didn't get home until midnight last night and since we are having a very hard freeze with 20 mph winds tonight, I had to get everyone ready for the night. All done now and everybody seems happy.

I'm going to post here what I said on the ASBC page for the Shawnee Show:

"I want to thank all the silkie breeders for making us feel so welcome and sharing their extensive knowledge with us. Bren and Deb...don't know how in the world you pulled it off...but my hat is off to you! You have done a phenomenal work with the lavenders and should be proud of your accomplishments! Another big "thank you" to Donnie for what he started and Deb and Bren brought to completion. We are thrilled to have been able to witness it...and all of us will benefit from your hard work forever.

It was a long haul from Florida but so worth it. "

When you take a few minutes to really think about it, what Bren and Deb did will be in the history books 100 years from now. It was just amazing that they were able to accomplish this and still smile and have a good time while doing it. Shoot, I was tearing my hair out just driving back last night...and I didn't even show anything!!!

The fight for the term "lavender" is not over and my bet is on Deb!! She will continue to try to get the term changed to lavender.

When I get my album finished by tomorrow and will post a link...

Here are a couple of teasers

Wow...that actually brought tears to my eyes. But...we did...enjoy it so much and at times I do stop and think what a big deal this is in the poultry world and it doesn't sink in. I told my principal when school started this year that I needed four days off to travel to a chicken show in Ohio....I kept talking fast while she looked at me like I was crazy and told her just that, "this is a big deal in the chicken world." She gave me the four days off maybe just because she figures I am nuts and needed the break?

I still see room for improvment and plan to keep doing that...improving the lavs. Yes...LAVS...they are going to be called by that little nickname by me forever.

I did so enjoy meeting faces that have only been typed fonts here on message boards and in emails. I haven't met anyone yet I didn't like.

Now on to the next project, Paints. What else can I find the time to take on in my life? It really is the greatest hobby in the world!

For now they will be technically called "self blues" but Deb is still working with the APA to eventually get the "self blue" term changed to lavender. Not just for silkies but for all breeds that have lavenders. We all believe that "self blue" is a confusing term and believe that the APA will agree in time.

Did anyone else notice that in the ABA bulletin, where they listed the "definition" of Self Blues, that there was NO mention as to beard type?? So, will both bearded & non-bearded be included??

Quote:
The process to get the lavenders accepted is a lot of paper work. Part of the work is submitting the standard description and in it, they are bearded. We were told to get NB into standards the process is repeated that we went through. I fear that would be a long hard job if that is true. Five years of breeding and showing, 5 breeders, and then APA requiring 50 examples of the consistency at one show while ABA required us to have 25. Now that is the hard part I would think with nb.
