I don't want to use her/him and mix up colors

That's entirely up to you what you'll do with her. ALL my grays (silver partridges) are lav splits; bred to other hens before I had blacks. When bred back to the lavender parent, the chicks will be either lavender or lavender splits--you KNOW one parent is pure lavender. Would get you there sooner than starting completely over, unless you can buy good pure lavs.

If she/he were mine and a good bird, that's what I'd do. And, if I remember correctly, that's what some Bren did when she first got into lavenders. You can check with her to see.

But if the chick has Blue in her...along with Lav....I wouldn't be 100% positive at hatch, which are which. I'm not 100% what color its mixed with??? If I did keep her/him I would keep it seperate with another Lav and test hatch just to see what I got out of them...but I couldn't call them Lav as I'm not positive what other color its hiding. I'm still very new to the color & I wouldn't know the difference so I wouldn't want to misinform anybody if I sold them.

I have hatched out a lot like that and I know my sire is a full lav. I did sell quiet a few of them but have kept 4 for my own breeding. Mine are only a few months from laying so if you like I can update you whether or not my greys hatch out lavs or not and if they come out with leakage or not. For whatever reason my weird greys are always very atractive with good type as yours looks to me. I say keep and see what happens

wow Its been a long time since Ive been on this thread:-( I think I have 100 pages to catch up on!

I have not been doing anything with my lavs and splits-just letting them have fun through Winter. All my girls went broody at once in Nov. So I let them all hatch out tester eggs about 5 weeks ago. Then I lost one with the cold snap last week was -38 below ( That or a heart attack) but she was meaty-crop was full-no blood-broken bones

bad day for me for sure. I have such a little group right now. 3 Split hens-1 split roo and 2 pure lav roos I hatched out. One of the hens is starting to lay again and I have 3 eggs in bator to test for fertility again. I had a hen throwing 4-toers. I could not figure out for the life of me who it was-as all my group has 5 toes each. Wasnt until I split all hens out and collected and marked all their eggs-hatched them out and nailed the 4-toer mom...She was the one hen I bought 2 years prior from VT from a breeder-She was perfect but I never saw the parents of her so Im guessing thats where the 4-toe thing came from ??

So sad for me but I gave her away the next day to a loving friend that just needed a buddy for her bantam hen. I havent done anything with them since Oct? Now Unsure about what Im going to do.. I deffinately want to keep going just hit a sad mark in my little lav silkie journey is all... I do have those 3 new lav roos I hatched and they are darling and sweet as pie! So Im taking split daddy out and selling him and putting one of those boys in:) They are 4 months old now??

If your parent(s) are really lavender and not dilute splashes, the lavender babes would definitely be lavender. Splashes often look like self blue chicks at hatching, but develop splashing as they feather out. Lavenders feather out lavender. The splits would not look even close to the lavenders; they'd mostly look like the bird in question--a "mutt" with strong, dramatic stripes and feathering out gray.

My little chick in question (the one in the pics) I'm unsure of the parents. I was "supposed" to get either 100% Pure lavs or Black/Lav split eggs when I bought them. Then this one hatched out...so I do not know what she's mixed with? Just from what the Lav experts say...."IF" she is mixed with Blue, I wouldn't know the difference...and I'm NOT experienced lol!!!

You can have a bird who is pure for lav but also has the pattern gene and silver, thus grey lavender (or whatever it would be called. With gold it would be lavender partridge. A self-blue bird should have no patterning, but yes it will provide lav to all its offspring.

I have a grey that is split to lavender. I can't wait to mate her to my new lavender roo! I personally like this grey color a lot and wouldn't mind having some more just like her.
