That is so sad and I hope he pulls thru for you. Don't beat yourself up to bad. Remembet that you are human and allowed to make mistakes.
I forgot to close my coop one night and also lost several of my silkies to a big stupid ugly chicken hawk that was in my coop when I went out the next morning.
They never seem to want to eat the culls do they. They always get the best ones!
Keep us posted on how he is doing and I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Oh, that's terrible! I do know they have very strong healing powers if not too badly injured. Hope for the best.

My IP roo is out of George's lines also--both sides. He looks more splash than anything, but has faint, faint dustings of buff.

My PI babes look as you describe. They look a lot like Bren's original lavender babes that had muted stripes, with the addition of some buff overlay. They are almost certainly from one of Bren/Deb's earlier lavs on their mothers' side, and probably a buff Showgirl from Bren. I've had three IP hens, but didn't know that was what they are until fairly recently--I just liked the unusual coloring, and well remember their look as hatchlings. I lost track of the babes from that original lav roo, as he had only four toes on each foot and most of his offspring were cockerels; many with only four toes. I did keep the pullets, though, so that has to be where these hens came from; probably granddaughters--I had another lav roo. I lost the best one to a snake attack.

The babes from the IP hen that is in with the roo all probably IPs, but don't have quite as much buff as I'd like. The third IP hen is just barely past the pullet stage, and she does have more buff, I just haven't put her in that pen yet. I think some of the second batch may actually be lavs, which is certainly possible with both parents carrying the lav gene. I'll just have to wait until they get a bit older.

Has anyone seen IP roos that look different from what I've described? John F says the ones he's had all look like that--that's where I got my roo--he's quite beautiful, and most of his babes have high vaulted skulls. The only other IP roo I've seen a picture of looks like mine.

I also lost a LOT last year when I didn't latch the outer door to the pen securely. At that time, I was usually putting them in their more secure coops at night, but didn't do it that night because it was so hot, nor did I latch the outer door securely. The next morning, I was at the computer when OUR dog marched by the window with one of the whites in her mouth. When I went to bed the night before, there were 17 silkies in that pen; when I rushed out then, there was ONE. I ran all over our two acres crying and searching, and did fine six more that were OK, plus a couple of dying ones. All told, she killed 10, and hid them somewhere I couldn't find them. For about two weeks, I had to face a new pile of a different color of feathers in her favorite spot every other morning. I never did find her stash. Lesson learned.

yes I lost her. he is barely holding on. the whole side of his face was bitten, his beak is split and I am having a hard time getting air in him, one eye is gone and I had to sew his face back on on that side.

he must have taken a big bite to the face then hid tucking as low as he could, I found him head down in the coop part with the pi hen almost covering him up. He is in really bad shape, but since he survived the night and this morning I am giving it my best. if he can keep breathing I will tube feed him tomorrow and go from there. eventually If he makes it (probably a 1% chance) I will repair his beak with some apoxy or something like that and he has one ok eye so he will not be blind. although I expect if he does make it he will be deaf and blind and never handsome again on that one side. I dont know if I am doing the right thing but he tries to sit up hen he hears me and he is not damaged anywhere else. I have had some pretty wounded birds heal so maybe....

gonna try to get some asprin in him later to but am not sure if that is the best thing for him as it will thin the blood too.

Once Sonrise Silkies picks up the blk/lav split roo and I can get him out of that pen and start breeding my little buff/lav showgirl from you to the Lavender Roo. I would be more than happy to raise you a pair of Isabel/Porcelains to replace yours.

I'm just so sorry this happened, I know how hard you have been working on them.

If it were me, I would def. give him some aspirin.

thanks guys. I am going to give him some aspirin and water tomorrow, I am afraid of drowning him until there is some sort of scab or healing around his air pipe/nostrils and I want him to clot and not have thin blood. I cant believe he is hanging on. he is all wrapped up sleeping in a towel with a heat lamp near by but not on him. knowing he ate well and drank a lot last night at 8:30 (as I saw him) I know he can go the day with out. tomorrow though meds and pain killers are going in him, that is if he is still here.

on a note more to the thread I banded and made my decision on the new up and comer lavs and my quest for that darker color on a good type bird. I have a PI pen and a lav pen with quiet a few change ups as you can imagine. before lasts nights events I actually had 3 flocks planned. now just 2 but I am happy with my decisions of those 2, now just need them all to breed.....

My daughter said her brothers GF was leaning over my bators trying to look at the eggs.

well he is alive, I am going to start treatments in a few minutes, just waking up now. he moved around and got more comfy too I guess that is a good sign.
