You should put your lavender rooster in with your split hens! And then put the split roosters in with the Black hens.

I was going to ask how you no who is a split and who is all back, guess you answered that for me!! LOL!!
Is there any way at all to tell who is a split maybe when they are older ??

Not to my knowledge:-( So Im ok with that-unless I see a really awesome one then Ill keep just for me no breeding I dont take any chances of screwing up my genetics-so when I say all I have are splits-I want to mean it 100% So right now all I have are my 7 splits-all black offspring will be sold with the possibility that they carry the lav gene.

Matt, I sold him-the roo was a jerk beyond and he just wasn't doing it for me-so I used him for his genetics and thats it! I know it will take me alot longer to achieve what I want but Im good with that-gives me more time "play" hahaha

As far as I know, the only way you'll know splits is if you mate a full lavender with something else. All the first generation progeny will then be splits even though it doesn't show in any way.

Deb started this with only splits to breed for lavender she had to keep really good records and pens to know which birds threw lavender chicks. Once you find that you know those birds are carrying one gene and kept for breeding back again. If they aren't giving any lavender chicks then you know there isn't a lavender gene at all in them. That was the hard long part and I missed out on it. When I bought in all I had was mutts, strange colored dark birds but Deb knew they were splits, carrying the ONE lavender gene, and would throw a percentage of lavender...25% and then 50% mutts again and 25% white, since that is all she had to start the process. I didn't keep pictures of those first 5 birds. I wish I had so you could see how far they have come. It took me two years to get decent breeding stock going from those mutts to all lavenders for breeding.

exactly! well said thank you-so all I have right now Are splits from a lav roo and black pullets-I sold the parents and kept only my splits to breed. I know I could have sped thigngs up and mated back to daddy to get 50% instead of 25% but he was lacking in the bigness I wanted to see and didnt want to keep breeding that back-so I have great splits that I have a smaller % of getting lavs but Im ok with that. Honestly Im not out to have 100 lav birds but I would LOVE to have 10-12 by Summer Im trying to get gorgeous pure blacks bearded silkies to mate back into those lavs once I have them hatched! haha Im already in to this 2 years I can wait...I hope this was only a small fun project for me but is turning out to be a alot of fun hard work Learning everyday too-

I got some Lavenders in the mail today and one of the pullets suffered brain damage. She isn't really walking, just sitting and continuously shaking her head in a "no" movement.

I remember someone on here mentioning they had a similar situation happen-- were you able to rehab it? What can I do to help it?
