Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Quote:
I am not an expert on chicken genetics, but if a splash was bred to a lav, the offspring would have to carry the lav gene..................since one parent is a lavender.

I thought that the splash cannot really express the lavender gene but I'm not sure.......someone let me know if I'm wrong. I've heard that the "smoky" colored splash carry the lavender gene. BUT THIS IS JUST what I've heard from other breeders. I thought for sure that I had a lav/splash chick awhile back as she looked like a lavender, but once she grew more, she just looks splash.

I think there are people out there doing different colors back to lavender. I think it's experimental at this point. I'm not doing it, mainly because I have plenty to work with w/o doing that right now.

Just trying to keep you folks entertained while we wait for those that can give more input!

I think buried in this post is an answer from Bren on why not to use anything but black for improving on the type and feathering of the birds. I understand it, just can't explain it.

Since she and Deb are one of the first to introduce the lavender birds and has gone through so many trials and errors with the color combinations I'll stick with the black/lav combo.

I'm going to have to thoroughly read through this thread. I have one pure lavender silkie (just over a month old...so no idea if it is a roo or pullet). I have 2 porcelain eggs, and 3 black silkie eggs in the incubator and 2 show quality buff silkies pullets. I am wondering if I should try making more split lavs with blacks this spring, or go full steam into a porcelain project? Dilemmas, dilemmas. I think this has been the only time I have hoped for a roo!!!

I posted this guy on a Showgirl thread I was hoping would get going but it seems like no one is interested so I will post him here too! This is my Lav SG roo from Bren (THANK YOU BREN!!!!!) I love this guy and he is even better in person. I just set 6 eggs from his pen which I think all of were laid by a Lav hen, but if not his other GF is a Black split lav. I have a black pullet growing out that I want to pair him with when she is old enough and take the Lav hen out so that he wil just be with black or split hens to help darken his babies skin. Then the plan is to breed him back to his daughters. Let me know what you guys think!
