Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

It isn't advisable, as others have said, to breed your lavs with colors other than black.

My lavs are directly from Bren/Deb, and when bred with blacks, the resultant black/lav splits are a more INTENSE black. No lav "bleeding" through.

IF you have what is truly full lavender, carrying the two genes...and you breed that bird to any color then all the off spring are carrying one lavender gene but WILL not show lavender yet. This is where I started saying split to.... what ever the color you used. THEN you breed those chicks back to the lavender bird and you should get 50% lavender and 50% of what ever. Now the whatever part is hard to tell if you are using blue or splash....so that is partly why we try to discourage the confusion.

Quite a few breeders are using lavenders for other projects and yes they can and do get lavenders down the line but again...can they tell for sure? Some use lavender breeding birds for Isabel and porc and yes to lighten up black in buffs. If they throw a lavender looking chick....it can be show as such but the nightmare comes with calling it a lavender when breeding for lavender. Does any of that make sense? We believe black has improved our lines and we know we can tell the lavenders from the blacks. And by the way...my very best black hen I have ever had was a black spit to lavender so you can get excellent birds from these splits. Breeding her back to black stock only gives me black since that would only be one lavender gene in her side of the family.

In fact I am using my last black split to lavender right now in another project only for her black quality and type. Her lavender gene will not do a thing for this breeding. Now are you more confused than ever? LOL

picked up a "lavender" silkie *possible* pullet today. Not sure about the specifics on silkies, or genetics, but assuming mine is a PQ bird, the really nice ones must be fantastic

I like the color, and the bird is so laid back compared to my seramas.

Makes perfect sense, thanks Bren!

No, makes sense! So when I breed these 1st generation splits back to a 100% lav, then take a lav chick from that breeding and put it in my lav pen, would it throw 100% lavs? Or would there be like a 25% rate of split chicks?

Splits bred to 100% Pure Lav will give you 50% lav offspring, then the lav offspring from that breeding bred back to 100% Pure Lav will give you 100% Lav offspring. LavxLav=Lav

Thanks! Wanted to be sure I was understanding things correctly
