Self-Reliance, The Economy, and You.

Completely agree, how about we ask Japan? Bad things CAN happen and WILL happen. The only question you should ask yourself is are you prepared? Most people could just ask their grandparents about the great depression and dust bowl. I am an American and will be ready for the hard times, because that just how I roll. I will be so prepared I will even be prepared to help others. That is just how I choose to live my lfie. And if nothing bad does happen, awesome! But it puts my mind to ease knowing I could survive a nuclear winter lmao.

Bartering is a pretty good system, except when you do it with a dishonest person.

My FIL talked about his folks living out here back in the 30's. They were barely hanging on. His Mom would take cream, butter and eggs into town and trade them for gas for the tractor. If they couldn't afford it they didn't buy it.
Only one place gave them credit and they made sure that bill was paid first.
Going through a bunch of papers she had saved (They threw nothing away) I found a receipt for her selling some turkeys back then. She got $.17 for the hens and $.23 for the toms.

Hey, I have family and friends that make fun of me for having a pantry system and storing foods. Of course I am the the first one the run to when they need food or something...

Yes we do, that is what my page is about our road to self reliance. I am glad that people are aware of helping themselves but there is so much more to self reliance and being selft sufficient than buying seeds and growing a veggie garden each year. This is a great topic!

Hi Smittenroade! We are neighbors! You really need to check out sufficient self, lots of good folks there. My DH and I live a few blocks from city hall in our little town and we garden in the front yard, and last summer added 2 hens in the back yard. We got 6 chicks 4 weeks ago to add to the egg menu. In our climate, we garden year around. Gathering eggs and picking fresh veggies to make an omlette is sooooooo goooood!!

We have acreage a few miles from town that we hope to start a house on this year or next. Then the real gardening and small livestock will commence. I am very interested in solar and wind turbine. Perhaps you could explain how you made yours.
