We ate our first home grown rooster this evening. Out of the five roosters that hatched last Spring, one went to a friend with two pullets, and four stayed with us. Three ended up in the freezer - thanks to a processing facility. Mr. FancyPants has remained with the flock of 7 hens. He got to stay because he was gentle and considerate to the hens and friendly to us. (He dances for the girls - then they don't seem to object to his advances.) Plus, he is really pretty. I am grateful for the meals provided by the roos in the freezer - it helps knowing that we couldn't keep them all for pets, and try as I did, it is hard to find people who want pet roosters!
