Selling birds unsexed- Sellers and Buyers Share Your Stories

I just sold 12 day olds and made it very clear they were straight run and that there WILL be roosters unless I was VERY lucky in hatching. I don't take roosters back or I might as well keep em and sell the roos separately. I don't make a business of selling chickens either, so hopefully it's understood..

People should just realize - Unless you are buying a sex linked where the color determines the sex, you are taking a chance. It's either male or female.

I ordered a bunch of straight run chicks from Cackle Hatchery. 16 Golden Laced Sebrights which appear to be 80% female and 17 Japanese black tailed white bantams which appear to be 90% male.

Oh well, that's how it goes.........................

I have a story to tell.

My uncle was looking for some started RIR hes so they could have some home-grown eggs. He found some guy in the newspaper who was selling 12 4 weeks old pullets. He bought them all, and a few weeks later they all started crowing! So, they brought them all to the flea mart and sold them as roosters, probably for the freezer. That is just how dishonest people can be.

I bought my first 6 from a local farm store, I got 4 roosters and 2 hens (of which 2 roosters and 1 hen are still with me)

My second set I bought 15, 6 BR and 8 RIR's. I lost ALL the RIR's within a couple days. 1 was the victim of my cat who got into the room we were keeping the chicks in. The others just fell over dead. Of the BR's I got 5 hens and 1 rooster. I had 1 BR drown, the other was a victim of the dog, after it got on top of the 6 ft fence, and jumped/flew down into the dog kennel. I still have 1 rooster and 3 hens from that batch.

The last batch of 12, I bought from a hatchery and bought them sexed, simply because I wanted more hens for laying. When my shipment arrived I had 13 birds so I assume they put an extra roo in for warmth.

Yah it's REALLY not fair to call em straight run when you KNOW they are all roosters. I know it's done all the time but I'd feel cheated (of course I know better already!). That's why I sold mine as day olds. I really have no clue what they are since I don't vent sex em and they are not sex linked.

So they could be all pullets for all I know!

Just a quick thought about the "50% hen or rooster" statement. That is 50% of EACH chick - not 50% of the group. That is a huge difference to explain (individual vs group). I understand it, you probably understand it, but not everyone understands it. I have found when explaining something to someone you don't know, it is best to explain at a 6th grade level until you can determine their level of understanding (novice or expert - I am not talking about intellect). In my job, I have truly learned the meaning of "assume" and realize how well my foot fits in my mouth!
