Selling chickens

I didnt realized you lived in San Fran. Yeah, I would sell them for more too. Everything is more expensive in very large cities. I live in a rule area so 2 -3 is what they go for around here. I would go less than 4-5, if not more where you live.

Market, breed, sex, age, quality... all get factored in.
Here I ask $3 for pure "hatchery" day olds and $2 for mixed. My BCM chicks though as day olds, if I every have extras to sell, I'll probably ask $8 for day olds and up from there. Once they're sexed the pullets double in price and the roos stay the same. Its hard to sell extra roos here... they tend to give them away free in the paper. So if they don't sell I give them to my neighbors to have a nice dinner or whatever they want to do with them.

Here in So Cal, pure bred rare breed chicks can start at $20 each. Hatching eggs $3 each and up. Not all my chicks are $20. PQ silikies start at $10, as well as mixed breed EE's. I do try to help people choose pullts if that is what they are looking for. If I guarantee they are pullets, they have 30 days to return any rooster chicks and can exchange them for pullets. If they buy straight run, they are welcome to return any rooster chicks that are problematic to them for zoning reasons. I don't "re-home" the returned roos. I cull them right away for biosecruity reasons, and either feed them to the dogs or put them in the freezer for me, depending on how long they took to return them.

It really more depends on the breed. I sell rare, from breeder quality stock, for $5 per chick and have no trouble getting it. A pure, but common hatchery type, gets me $3 usually, mixed or not. Any cockerels that are of mixed parentage are given away most of the time because it's hard enough to find homes for the purebred boys so I don't charge for the crosses. All point of lay pullets will go for at least $10. An older hen may go for $5 except in special situations.

The feed store in town sells chicks that come straight from Ideal for $4-6 each. She sells grown roosters, even mixed breeds, for $25/each--amazing she can get that.
