selling price for eggs?

I am getting $ 7.50 a dozen from a gentleman that wants fresh eggs! (He takes 2 dozen every two weeks -- that pays for all the feed for my 9 hens!) However, some of the Farmer's Markets in this area charge as much as $6.00 a dozen.

Not to mention that most things are 2-3 times the price in San Francisco...I think you are a geographic anomaly and not the norm, no offense.
I think for the rest of us, if everyone within a few miles keeps chickens you're lucky to get $1 per dozen. If keeping chickens is not the norm in your area and people usually shop at a regular grocery, then maybe $2 is do-able. If you live or work in an urban area where farm fresh products are more difficult to come by and people are used to paying the price to shop at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's type stores then you can pretty much name your price within reason...probably even $5 per dozen or more. And if you live in the Bay Area...the sky's the limit!​

Here's a question, I have several types of chickens so I get a variety of size and color eggs. Do you all separate the eggs by size and color or do you mix them up?

I've been giving eggs to friends and only give them the most recent, hence the variety they get.... What time frame is considered "fresh"? Same day they're laid? Within a week?

On the rare occasion that I actually sell and not give away eggs (dh gets so mad at me!) I get $2. I do go through all of the cartons and make sure they get the biggest ones and a good color variety from light pink to dark brown and a green egg.

Location is important but so is the egg.

My hens are Fed Organic, non-soy feed, they have access to the outside 24/7 and the are allowed to free range 1-2 hours per day. They get treats and are treated as pets.

I have a small loyal following that pays $3 / dozen using recycled cartons. Many of them used to buy Caged Free, Organic Eggs or Omega 3 eggs at the store. Those now cost more than $3/doz at our local store. You can get farm fresh eggs on craigslist for 1.50 and 2.00 but I can still get $3 else where.

Let people know your raising/chicken practices there are many people that care as much about the how as the fresh and you only need a few loyal customers unless you have tons of chickens. I sell 3 to 4 dozen a week at $3/doz which pays for the feed and bedding and gives me 1-2 dozen a week to eat free. (of course this doesn't count time).

Edited to add: I have a nice variety of color and I think that is a plus. Each pack normally gets 1-2 blues, 1-2 greens, a cherry, a speckled, and some light to medium browns.

My husband wants to try $4 a dozen, to start with and then if it turns out we need to lower it then we can do so.

My local farmers market sells the eggs for $3 a dozen. I'll probably be selling eggs for that much if I attend the farmers market. Otherwise, I'll probably sell to my coworkers (I work in a hotel with about 30 other employees) for $2 a dozen.

I don't even know how much eggs are around here, I don't pay attention anymore LOL. I guess I better go check it out. Personally, $4 seems a bit much. BUT, since I'm just wanting to sell the extra 2-4 dozen, maybe someone will come and pay what we ask for them...

Pricing is always different everywhere you go. But one things for sure yard eggs are definitely better than Krogers eggs. My eggs aren't totally organic but my birds eat bugs & greens from my garden which is organic so the only chemicals they have ever put in their system is what is in their laying pellets. Store bought chickens in most cases never eat greens or bugs & live in 12 x12 cages. So, in my mind you should charge more. Another thought I give my chickens fresh water daily, keep their coops clean & they breath clean fresh air. Their not stressed out . I get three dollars a dozen in reality it should be more. In other words my birds live a natural life they range no artificial lights to get more eggs no steroids to pump more eggs from them Etc.

I charge $4.00 for a dozen & $2.00 for a half dozen. $$$$$$$$$$ We are saving the money to go to Disney World so fer we have made something around $900.
