Selling your Animals while home Alone

I never sell from home. Period. I always meet in a public place, and make them leave first.

Why? - for several reasons.. But here's a good one.

A few years back I was assisting my brother with an American Game sale to some shady clientel. No more than a few days went by and we started noticing birds missing in VAST numbers. Almost 200 birds stolen. So, what did we do? We set up cameras and sat up camp. That guy, plus his friends, were loading up our breeders by the truck load. We were able to detain him until police arrived and got all of our birds back. Following that an electric fence went up around the perimeter of the whole 20 acres, all gates got new locks and bigger chains, and several new LGD's and two very protective strays were placed on duty. No one was allowed on the property for a sale from then on out, and I still follow these rules. My uncle had apparently sold to the guy before and showed him around, pointing out pens of the 'best birds' and things of the like. He knew EXACTLY what pens to hit and took only the best of the best. We did lose several of our good young roosters, god only knows what fate those poor boys went through...

Funny thing, he never touched any of our other birds. Stayed on the half of the property with the American Games.

I bet they were used for fighting.. :(

Since I was a teen I have "sold" or helped sell our pups. When I was in my 20's I started to have people over on occasion when my dad couldn't be there. I never had a problem with it. When I moved out and got married my husband wasn't "into" the dogs. I never even considered if he would be home or not when I made apts for people to come see pups. I did have a few people (men, younger usually) try to intimidate me. It rarely worked, when I felt uncomfortable I usually ended the interview and asked them to come back another time. Only one time could I not get the people to leave, they wanted to leave with a pup and I never allow pups to go on a first visit. They tried intimidating me into allowing them to take a pup. I let my Akita into the house LOL. They left a deposit and agreed to come back in a few hours. (I usually make people wait 1-3 days). When they came back my dad was there and he returned the deposit to them. lol (My husband was more easily intimidated than me so my dad was always my backup)

I don't intimidate easily and I think most people are generally good so I still don't worry about anyone coming over when I'm alone. But, my current boyfriend is not as easy going as I am. He would never "allow" me to show pups without him at home. (Not that he really can "allow" or "deny" anything LOL)

I stopped breeding because I couldn't stand dealing with the public any more. I never placed a classified ad for dogs. These were people from shows or referred by the parent breed club and still some of them were either creepy or total idiots. I can't even imagine what you'd get from an ad on Craigslist.

I have been robbed by people from Craigslist. One keeps you busy and the rest fan out and take anything they can carry off.

No more. I don't have people to my house.

Wow at some of these stories. I've been selling chinchillas for about 15 years now and I'm single. Never worried about any of it, never had anything stolen and have never run into people whom made me nervous about letting them in my house. Granted, I don't give out my address until I've spoken with them on the phone a few times. I get around 5 visits per month. Maybe people who want a chinchilla are by nature less aggressive than those who want dogs.

I agree with the fear is crippling comment made above. Then again, everyone I have visited that sells chickens has fenced and gated property, so there must be some serious theft and intrusion problems when dealing with poultry people.

Spoof, I think you've stolen my horse. LOL - although not 'picture perfect' any picture is a good picture with your best friend.

I still don't think I will sell from my home. Ever. Not after what happened with our birds.
