Semi-automatic coop and flock - can it exist?

I think your biggest problem will be the neighborhood dogs. Once the mutts know no human is around for extended periods they will be looking to have fun at your expense....

As far as your son leaving, we had the same problem when we were planning to move our farm from Upstate NY to Alabama....
Our grown son thought he could have free room and board, have his laundry done and use his room as a local hangout. Jerry wanted to throw him out on his ear! I had a better idea....
I told Billy, very nicely, no more free laundry or room and board, it would cost him $450 per month. If his friends wanted to hang out he would have to pay a cover charge, $20 per person.... If he didn't want to shell out money he had to work with us on the farm. Baling hay, feeding livestock, mucking out the three 100x60 barns, fixing fence, bush-hogging, etc....
He lasted a month doing farm work with us. He decided leave and share an apartment with one of his buddies.....😇
