Hi all! I've been reading this forum for quite a while as it usually comes up in search when I google a chicken question (lol). Happy to finally be joining now!

I currently have 6 chickens in my pet/layer flock (2 EE hens, 1 EE roo, 1 Cochin hen, a silkie chick, and a 55 Flowery hen). Then my kids have a project flock with 3 market broilers headed for the 4-H auction at the county fair later this summer.

Been reading online about heritage breeds and meat birds, and I'm really interested to try to get a flock of heritage birds going. Maybe for meat.

Good to be here, look forward to chatting!

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens Melanie. You may want to check out "Heritage" breeds and/or "Meat birds"

Thank you! I saw the incredibly helpful "how to" post on processing meat birds. It was a little more intense than I expected (lol) but if I want to learn it, I have to be prepared.

Hello, Melanie, and welcome to BYC! :frowGlad you joined.
I admire your ability to watch those videos on processing birds. I just can't "do the deed". I'll have to have my birds sent out for processing when I finally get to the point I am ready to raise a batch.
