(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Started April 2022
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Adopted 3 first generation hens (~ 2 years old)
Hatched 5 second generation hens in our yard (10 months old)
Edit: Also had two roosters but I think they disappeared because of territory issues? Unsure, this will be a future question post!
(3) What breeds do you have?
We're in Hawaii, so we have mutts adopted from the gulch! Some look like Norfolk Grey mixed with jungle fowl (almost all are black hens with a couple white with black markings). They are small and like to fly!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
When they honk with happiness and run-fly to see you (and for the food!). And that they act as our both our pest control and fertilizer in the yard. Sometimes we find centipedes in our house, so we bring one of the chickens inside to gobble them up!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
houseplants, gaming
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
No other pets -- we had a pet rabbit for 11 years but never got over her death. These chickens have helped heal that wound by being semi-wild -- we don't need to feed them if we go on vacation because they forage and survive on condensation or drip irrigation for water. At the same time we've had some chickens come and go (we suspect territory issues), so that's why we love the ones that stay because they choose to visit and sleep in our yard.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Last year we had a huge chicken emergency! This forum really helped give us ideas on how to give her the best chances for recovery. A two week old chick got bitten by a mongoose and couldn't walk. We brought her indoors and put topical antibiotics over her wound. It took her 10 days for her to walk with a limp, but she successfully reunited with her mother and siblings. She still has her limp (and hops really cutely when she runs), but is fully healed! We also looked up other chicken behavior on this forum and learned so much. Thank you for all the help so far!
