WOW! My chickens are so silly! We had a storm yesterday-really needed the rain, so I was sitting on the porch LOVING IT! I looked towards the hen house and run, and all of the chickens were out in the run, Standing in a downpour!! When I went down to close up the house, they were sopping wet!! My question is, does this set them up for getting sick? Should I do something preventative for them this weekend? AND WHY DON'T THEY HAVE SENSE ENOUGH TO GET OUT OF THE RAIN???

most of my flock hates the rain and run right inside, but my wyandottes LOVE the rain. I think they are the smart ones cause they are cooled off and getting all the worms that poke up during the rain. I wouldn't worry about them getting sick until it is cold out and there are those sleeting rains ( I didn't see where u live, obviously not a concern in warm climates).
I don't know what I will do if they stand out in the freezing rain, lets hope they are smart enough not to do that!

Yea, i thought about that . We are in steamy hot Texas, so I think they were just cooling off. I did turn off their fan last night so they would not get chilled. It got down to 70 last night, not too cool. They looked like drowned rats! I had to laugh at them.

my older girls were standing out in the rain yesterday as well as my silkies, i did put the chicks in the growout coop before the rain started so they at least stayed dry. ( i'm also leaving the in today because of the rain) the silkies looked so silly all wet and i think its the first time they could see well because the rain flattened down their feathers and uncovered their eyes. but all the older hens were happy scratching around in the mud and are out there again this morning.

Mine stand in the rain too. But i've noticed that most of the time, the water doesn't really soak through to their skin, and even many of their feathers are still dry. The adult birds do a pretty good job of insulating themselves.

My silkies LOVE the rain... Even if i put them in they hop right back out... And there shivering!! Dumb birds! I think they just like to see me sopping wet chasing them with a towel!
