Sentinel Chickens

A friend of mine works in the health dept. and has offed me some hens that have been used as sentinel chickens. Sentinel chickens are use to test for west nile virus. They are kept in cages in mosquito infested areas to be bitten repeatly. They have blood drawn from them to check to see if they are infected. Their feathers from under their wings have been removed to make the blood drawing easier.

I don't know what breed they are, he said large hens. I should be getting the in a couple of week. These poor things don't know what being a chicken is, they have been lab rats all their lives.
