My little flock of seven free ranges in half of my backyard. We do have a termite infestation in our garage, so need to treat to get rid of that and avoid further problems. The pest control company is recommending Sentricon bait system. Is this safe to put in the areas the chooks have access to, or should I avoid putting the traps along that section.

I can't say with any certainty, but I believe Sentricon is an underground elimination system. I don't know if the poisoned termites come to the surface to die or not where they could be consumed by chickens. I'd think it is better that it does its work undground than above, however. Might email the company??

I actually did write the pest control guy along with posting this. Received the following response:

"Thank you for your concerns. Termites are a subterranean creature and live deep in the soil. The likelihood of chickens coming into contact with termites will be next to none. Even if a termite were eaten their no pesticide as one commonly would relate to. We have placed them in farm settings in the past with no problems. The traps are placed within three feet of the property and are flush with ground level. I have bigger issues with dogs digging them up. And they have a fairly tough locking mechanism as well."

Have you read the information about the product online? Will you be treating the garage with a quick kill product too? Saving the house and garage will take some insecticide treatments, and this stuff looks like a good long term management method. Thank goodness I've never had this problem!!! Mary

I think this will pretty much take care of the issue. They will be putting a bait trap in the garage, but it is opposite side of the house from chickie area, so I wasn't worried about that one. I am also in Colorado, with winter coming and they aren't as crazy active here as in other parts of the country. Thanks all for your replies!
