Separating babies from Mom

Or a temporary bachelor pad when we have roosters to take care of... Because my husband tends to procrastinate🤣

That's what I'll do then! I'd also like to move her and the rest. The reason we abandoned that coop is because it's on our upper deck behind my husband's shop. Our yard coops are much better covered by our LGD. That's snake territory out there.
After taking all the chicks, grab the momma and move her to her new coop. Then give her back the three chick you want to keep.

Snakes are really dangerous for chicks.

Excellent! Thank you for the help! I kind of felt like all at once was best but it's the first time I've ever done it and I was thinking that could be the worst way to do it, I should probably ask someone who knows 🤣

We are always glad to help

Let us know how it went.
:D

I definitely will! When I found her sitting on that nest there must have been 18 of her eggs in there. By the time they hatched she was down to 11 and 9 hatched. We saw this guy 4 days before hatch. Bet he's the culprit. We've reinforced that coop the best we could but it's not worth any extra efforts for a temporary bachelor pad.

I think it's hilarious when they say cemani's lay 80 to 120 eggs a year. She lays almost daily. I'd say average of 6 a week. She's WELL over 120 this year already! She's no joke!

Well that didn't go as planned. By the time I had caught two mom turned into a prize gamecock on me and they were squeezing through the chicken wire. Finally had to put her in the pet taxi and let them go through the holes in the front to get to her. But they're safe on the screen porch for right now. Should have the smaller hardware mesh pen cleaned and moved by this weekend and then they can go there. And I hear the thunder coming...

Everybody was so upset I couldn't split them up. I just felt like every hour they were out there was more likely I was going to go out and have a lesser head count. I'll wait till it's dark tonight to do the split lol she's much happier on the screen porch though. She can see and hear the other chickens but she's familiar with the porch enough she knows she's got the sweet spot. She even naps while they go and eat and drink now. Since this morning in the coop she wouldn't take them back into the back and the nest anymore. She just kept them under her wings at the door.

Did you try to remove the chicks during daytime?

Although your porch set up looks cozy, it is not safe out there.
I did remove them during the daytime. It's just not safe out there and that huge black snake is definitely out and about during the day. The porch is absolutely safe (snake proof too). I've raised all my chicks there. And my squirrels (I do wildlife rehab) Not only is it screened in but it's where 175# Oz sleeps. You could leave a steak out there and as long as he can't get it it will still be there in the morning lol! It's not just any porch 😆
