Separating Chicks for Extra Room

Do you intend to give them the whole room? No container system? If that is so, I suggest that you put down a tarp or shower curtain, then put the shavings on top of that. How old are they, how many? By 2 - 3 weeks of age, recommended brooder space is 2 s.f./bird. I'm guessing your birds are older than that, so are ready for a coop. But, I'm sure you've figured that out, and are doing the best you can. You might consider putting up a temporary covered run for them now. If you are a "stay at home" you could put them out during the day, and bring them back in at night.

BTW, how old are your chicks?

One thing that my chicks loved in their brooder before we got them outside was a big lump of soil that we dug out of the yard. (just shovel up grass/roots/soil and dump into some sort of box or container.) Really gave them lots to do instead of pick on one another!

They are just a few days over 2 weeks. The soil thing sounds great! They are already dust bathing in their food bowl lol. They also like to foraging through the shavings so some dirt would most likely be well received.

They are just a few days over 2 weeks. I wouldn't even consider putting them outside for a good while. They are so small. These are Seramas so I'd be too worried putting them outside anytime soon.

And yes they'd have the entire storage room, minus the stuff in there.

Picture of the brooder and of one of the chicks. The brooder is just a long tote, maybe just over 2ft in length and around 1ft wide to just a touch over that. And I've got 10 chicks altogether.

Yep, they'll be glad for the extra room. Beware, they will be flitting around in there like a bunch of parakeets by the time they are 3 weeks old.
