We are going out of town for the weekend & have to leave my little sweethearts, 6 3-4 week old golden comets. They'll be perfectly safe and fine, but I feel bad that they won't have anyone come in and say hi to them a few times a day (and possibly sing to them, not that I would do anything like that

)
Anyway I was wondering if there were any treats that are safe to give at this age, I was thinking of getting them a baby-cake or something like that but then I read you can't leave them in the pen with the chicks? Is this true? If so, what can I do for them that will be a special treat and help assuage my guilt? lol
Thanks in advance :)

Chickens absolutely love eating cooked egg, and things like worms! But it's best not to leave that sort of stuff in with them for a few days, so I'd say go for a small cabbage hung up in the brooder. I've seen this suggestion before, and the chickens love pecking at it, gives them something exciting to do. :p
Good luck!

Oh thankyou that will be perfect, I have a half a cabbage in the fridge I was worried about not using anyways lol! Now to figure out how to rig up a cabbage-hanger! Any suggestions?

Go down to the feed store. They have this little wire mesh basket (I forgot the name of it), that you put cabbage in and hang it in the run. If they want more than 5 bucks for it that's too much. It's just a cheap little thing. I'm pretty sure you can find it on Amazon, too.

i have a wire basket of the sort that you put blocks of suet in for wild birds, do you think this would work?

I guess you could try it, although some people poke a hole through the middle of the cabbage and thread a string through then tie a knot... I don't know how you could go about make such a hole. :lol:
