Seperated quail

What is your cage set up? Although I agree, I don't breed any traits that I find unappealing, I have kept extra males for longer than needed out of convenience. I use ground pens, so I have used small travel bird cages inside the larger enclosure with the bad bird inside. That way they still get to be with everyone with causing problems. How old is your male? If you're only keeping them as pets, he may calm down as he reaches a year old.

Nabiki, I agree not to keep aggressive birds... But do you take out of breeding the frightened females too? Those who are really scared of the males? I have a cage full of females who don't like males at all :)...
I can't say I've ever had that problem. Most of my birds are pretty mellow. If it did happen, yes, I would probably cull them too. I give them the best life I can, but my ultimate goal is meat, eggs, and breeding. If I really liked the hens, I might separate them and keep them just for eating eggs.

I keep my birds in pens on the ground. They have a lot of space. I keep about 10 birds in a 20 square foot pen.

About the same here, 2 square feet per bird seems to go a long way to keep behavior issues to a minimum. Having grass and stuff to hide in helps a lot. I keep 2 males and 8 female in each pen with no fighting at all. But, I have to mention I've been breeding exclusively for temperament for the past few years as well.

I just swept up the leaves from my front yard and dumped them into my quail pens. They're hopping around and burying themselves in the leaves.

I keep 2 males to 8 females too.

Thanks.
