I have a buff orpington hen that hatched 2 chicks but sadly one died a day later. Her baby is 5 weeks old. She layed her first egg since becoming a mama today. I want to return her to the coop but don't know how baby will take being by his self. I do have astrolorp chicks about the same age and I was thinking of putting one in a pen with him, but they are a little bigger than him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Five weeks old is the average age a hen will wean a chick. The chick will do just fine on its own. Trying to add it to a younger brood is not likely to work.

I've had single chicks weaned by broody hens at that age and they've fared exceedingly well.

Allow the hen to return to her normal life, and allow the chick to integrate itself. Chances are the hen will permit it to continue to associate with her for a while longer until it gets used to being a member of the flock.
