September 2016 Hatch-A-Long

well, today was day 7 so we checked the weights again and candled the eggs we could (not the dark shelled BCM).

so far the weight loss is spot on, i've calculated that i'll be needing approx. .3g per day on average against the total average weight. so far so good on that side.

from the candling, it looks to be like we have approx. 90% of the swedish flower hen eggs developing, 50% of olive egger, 70% wheaton ameraucana, and the BCM are unknown.

we'll see on day 10 if the ones we think are duds or developing, still are

That sounds good for the weight loss. Let us know how that works out for you. I am curious as I have read about using weight loss as an indicator but as this is my first hatching experience I didn't weigh at the start as I had no idea I should. O well, I guess I will just have to make sure I incubate again so I can track weight loss in the future.

I am on day 14 so will candle tonight. Hoping development and air sacs look good....

Ah the waiting game is hard. Although if everything looks good tonight I will have to prepare the brooder on the weekend so it is ready to go

I'll keep you posted, so far the air sacs look to be about where they ought to be as well for day 7. I'll be checking the weight and candling again day 10 and will give an update. hoping the ones we found to be good will still be good! here's to hoping i guess, eh?

I like the weight measurements because I'm a pastry chef / bread baker by trade! LOL I couldn't resist I suppose

Use the brinsea and send the r-com to me.

Lol SunHwaKwon. Now I am trying to figure out which one you are suggesting I use from your comment. I am confused lol.
I am turning more to the r-com as it's more roomy, the brinsea is for 6 eggs, and although I only have 6 eggs, I think it would be best to have more room during hatching.

Day 14 candled and all 12 are still looking good

Even managed to get a brief video of one of them moving a fair bit

This is the air sacs marked day 7 and 14. How are they looking? I was wondering if they are a bit small or if they look OK.

Thanks

Very cool video! The only one looking small (to me) is the middle row second from bottom. What's going on bottom right? No air sac?

I have never used either. A lot of people sing praise for brinsea but the r-com seems ideal to me and I would have one if I could afford it. I don't think you can go wrong either way. How many eggs are you setting? That may be the deciding factor.

Okay got mine set this morning.
I set 72 chicken eggs and 120 Guinea eggs. The Guinea are for my dad and brother.
