September 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Day 14 candling and it looks like I'm down to 21 but I can't see into the olive Eggers. Air cells look really good so I increased humidity from 40% to %50, went dry the first week but those dark shells need a lot at the end. I know they are tough because today when I went to use one from my fridge, I tried to make a fried egg and had to tug at that membrane and ended up fishing out shell, crazy!

Well to day is day 22 and incubator is off had 18 chicks 1 died and the last 3 I helped was not developed right so I had to put them down 2 of them had their insides on the out side and the other one didn't have feet now I know why is not good to help them if they can't make it on their own. But on the up side I have 14 very healthy happy chicks with everything in the right place. Good luck and happy hatching to everyone!

I have no idea why these things happen but it's happened to me. I have had chicks like that and a bloodhound puppy once!! Awful. But culled in both cases. I see you have many healthy chicks. I hatch a lot at once and sometimes I think it's the odds. I had 1 in 30 bloodhound pups have that (intestine on the outside, I always have feet) and maybe 2 or 3 out of 100 chicks.

I help out shipped eggs since it seems even health chicks can have issues hatching from eggs that have been tossed around.

I just had one chick hatch that had the same intestines on the outside issue that yours did.

I wonder what causes it in chicks?

Had a stray cat that I took in who gave birth to kittens soon after. All 6 of them had intestines on the outside and the vet said in that case it was most likely genetic. Don't know if the same would apply to birds.

and were officially into day 21 here! (Even though it's technically night now lol)

I've got the eggs rockin' now, so we'll see in the morning, hopefully some good pipping happening! yay!!!

Thank you!

how are your eggs doing?

The are not doing too well.
I am down to 1 from the first 6, tomorrow (thursday) will be day 14 on that one.
The second lot I set are on day 6, I candled last night, and to be honest, I am not sure if I am seeing blood rings on a few or the start of veining, and in some, I don't see anything.
Will have to see what happens in a couple more days.
I am so disappointed in these eggs, and it appears they are really hard to hatch. It didn't help that they were shipped, but there is no one near me selling eggs.
Starting to think it will be best to just find a breeder and buy the birds.

I had more trouble checking veining on the bresse before day 10 than I did on the bantams, the bresse eggs seemed porous compared to the others and it made it harder to tell what was really going on during the early stages. Once the veins thickened up it got easier.

Just finishing up day 23 in the bator. Had a barnevelder hatch this morning. Was going to pull the plug in the remaining eggs, opened up the lid to pull eggs out and noticed an egg pipping... Hopefully this little one isn't too weak. Altogether for this hatch, 13/15 of my own barnyard mix, 5/11 isbar shipped and 3/4 barnevelder shipped. Used "dry" method.

Wow! I have missed a lot! I will get caught up this evening... I have been nursing my little wry neck in the evenings
