September 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I went from having 12 eggs set on 9-5in the incubator to suddenly setting another 6 on Sunday and putting another 12 (roughly 14 days along) under a pullet that suddenly went broody.
Of the 12 original 2 were dropped and only 4 had vines and moving babies. But I am holding out till day ten before getting rid of any.

It's day 21 I have 15 chicks and 3 more I'm helping the eggs are to hard for them. When they are done I will be putting the incubator up for the year, I say that every time and then I pull the incubator back out. I blame my husband because he gave me chicken for our Anniversary 2 years ago so it's his fault

Yeah that's where I got it! Was picking up some other things so thought it wouldn't hurt to try something new especially if it'll be easier to clean :D I'll definetly have to put up walls, you're right! Once they get their wing feathers they love testing them.
Hopefully I can find enough cardboard to make it tall enough. I don't think I have any more chicken wire and don't wanna go buy some (at least my hobby will never reach the expense of my bfs car addiction hah! Or at least for now) :/ definetly don't want to have a fire hazard by putting a fabric near the lamp, so wish I could afford an ecoglow!

use a heating pad. That's what I do. Find the mama heating pad thread in raising chicks.

I broke another OEGB egg yesterday when I had to move the incubator. So out of 18 eggs, I've broken 2, 1 looks scrambled, 5 look good, 4 look like quitters, and the rest are clear. I added six guinea eggs that I stole from a broody. I think they'll be done at the same time.

Only 2 bresse and one serama X EE hatched successfully.
I think I would have gotten a much better hatch rate if;
A) I had known that La bresse eggs do not have a bloom protecting them so need extra care in handling and candling.

B) If my daughter had not figured out the lock on the door of the spare room and repeatedly cracked eggs.

So cute!

Japanese quail are so cute!!! Two hatched before dawn, one at breakfast, four at lunch, and three more in the afternoon. Still waiting for six little eggs, but these darlings are adorable. I read that quail need to move to the brooder sooner, so I took them out. They are eating chick food and boiled egg yolks already.
So cute, I got 20 once, every shell identical, so I was so surprised by the color varieties!
