September 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Well I have already lost four guineas. One pipped but was rolled over pip down by a chick and drowned. Two tried to hatch too early, I guess, and one died while zipping so I checked it and it had a deformed beak. Those are the incubator ones. To recap, my guinea hen decided to go broody on 49 eggs. Over the first two weeks I managed to candle and steal most, leaving her with eight and me with 19 once clears and bads were discarded. All the eggs have spent some time under her and some time in the incubator. I think yesterday was day 28 but it's hard to pinpoint day 0 with a broody, you know. So anyway, out of the incubator 19, four have passed, three are in the brooder box with the speckled Sussex chicks, two are hatched but still in the incubator, and five are zipping now. I know at least one has hatched under the broody. I need to end up with fifteen for my neighbor and the rest will need to be split between two broody guinea hens so I can break them. I have two others who want some but now that I've lost at least four they may have to wait a few weeks. The other hen has a clutch of fourteen she's sitting on but it's in our burn pile and we want to burn it asap so I'm going to give her some keets in hopes she'll take them. Then I'll take the eggs and finish them off. I had planned to be done with keets in August. Oh well.

So I'm so bummed

One of the la bresse that pipped last night didn't make it. It looks like a loop of intestine got wound around its neck and strangled the chick as it contracted. I'll spare you the pictures.
I've never seen something like this. It appears that the intestine loop was seperate from the main yolk. Is this just really bad luck or a problem with genetics or incubation?

The remaining bresse is making progress and I'm hoping to have another chick by the end of the day

Intestine or umbilical cord? If it's intestine, it wouldn't have survived even if it hasn't strangled. I'm sorry s/he didn't make it :(

It was definitely intestine. When it flopped out of the egg and I saw what was going on I briefly though I could loosen it, get the head free and maybe it would retract like a un-absorbed yolk would. But it was really tight and the chicks abdomen had already turned black from septicemia

Day 10 update. It seems the PO must have really tossed these eggs around. I had 4/19 eggs (egg 19 being a cochin mix egg from my own flock) developing on day 7. Day 10 is my throw out day. I ended up pulling 16 eggs, egg # 5 was alive on day 7, but died at some point.

So, three eggs left in the incubator. Two from shipped eggs, one from my own flock. Not so good, but OK going into winter. Not sure what I would have done with 19 more chicks!

You would sell the extras to support your habit of course. Did they develop and quit or no development at all?

Cant find my phone to take a picture, but the last la bresse is out! and healthy.

YAY!!!!:weee

Yay! That's horrible about the other one. How many side your end up with total?

Only 2 bresse and one serama X EE hatched successfully.
I think I would have gotten a much better hatch rate if;
A) I had known that La bresse eggs do not have a bloom protecting them so need extra care in handling and candling.

B) If my daughter had not figured out the lock on the door of the spare room and repeatedly cracked eggs.

Wow! What a difference between my August Hatch and September.

August: Six shipped peafowl eggs. Absolutely babied them, and got just one beautiful and perfect peachick.

September: Sixteen local quail eggs. Same incubator, same routine. Last night, pipping and peeping starting and today we have had TEN adorable little quail chicks pop out. They are so cute!!!

Pics to come. It's quite possible more will hatch. Those eggs are rockin' and rollin'. I had heard that quail are easy to hatch, and they do seem very vigorous.
