Serama chicks and their weights at a month old

Updates:

Presley (last weight on Sept 23 was 18.65 oz) and Ayeza were rehomed and Gail was killed by a predator. We let them out into the backyard everyday after dinner but sometimes don’t have the time to stay more than a couple of hours to supervise them until they go to their roosts so since Gail died they get less daily hours outside because the days are getting shorter and it gets dark out quicker we let them out about an hour earlier. I was going to rehome all my chickens except maybe 5 seramas to make more space for my rabbits (rabbits are quieter; we live in the city) but DH wants to keep everyone except 2 cockerels and my son and I do like them. So only 2 cockerels are going to the Oct 21st auction.

Buttercup my buff cochin who was on 4 eggs from Presley x Henley had 3 hatch: the egg that didn’t hatch was dark in colour. A black chick with black and white toes hatched on Aug 11 and was killed the next day by a cochin hen that laid an egg in the same nest. I no longer have Snowball the white cochin. A white chick hatched Aug 12 that was feathering wheaten when a 5 week old Hamburg chick trampled her and she died on Aug 17. That day I then put the 2 chicks in a cage with their mom but it was too late and the third chick, black with black legs was found wet because of the waterer spilling probably when mom was moving around. I thought the chick was dead but was able to bring it back to life with a hairdryer then went to school after removing the wet puppy pad underneath and replacing with a new one. When I got home the chick was found out of the cage and dead, probably also trampled. I didn’t think the bars would be big enough but they were. So Buttercup has no chicks but she isn’t broody and laid her first post-broody egg today.

The chicks before they died:

Priscilla’s eggs from Presley x Dustbunny hatched. They are the last ones in this month’s pictures as they are our youngest seramas. I have them in a rabbit cage where it’s impossible for the chicks to get out so they won’t get trampled by other chickens.

I’ll be taking their pictures after they’ve gone onto their roosts in the evening. They were so much calmer yesterday evening. Only Crescent lightly pecked me but was cooperative. Or I might take pictures during the day of the cooperative ones and less cooperative in the evening as they tend to want to sit as they were roosting.

Priscilla 6 month old (Apr 5) brown red smooth pullet 14.5 oz or 411g. Being broody put her from Class C to Class B as she lost 2 ounces since last month. She’s covering 2 chicks in this photo.

Pinecone 6 month (Apr 6) exchequer frizzled pullet 16.85 oz or 479 g Class C. I saw my broody EE bantam peck her on the roost tonight. Hoping that when her 7 week old Hamburg chick is less dependent on her that she will be nicer to Pinecone.

10 seramas left.

The youngest chick died a few days after the photo from my last post due to getting wet. Broody hens + shavings + waterer not a good combo due to the waterer being knocked over when she scratches in the shavings.

When the remaining chick was 3 weeks old, her mom Priscilla wandered with the other seramas and roosted with them, leaving the chick chirping below. She had wings so I put her up with her mom but the next morning I found her in the shavings of a rabbit’s cage. The bars are only about an inch thick so I was surprised that a 3 week old serama chick could go in there.

The day before yesterday I found the 2 month old micro chick dead as she got her head stuck in the automatic feeder.
