Serama Hatch-A-Long!!

Thank you. :) I think you're right about the focus on type. Breeders line breed to focus in on desired genes but undesired genes will also become concentrated. And many don't keep their stock for longer than a couple years. I'm sure a lot of them don't refresh their stock and/or cross back out frequently enough to maintain optimum health. I'll probably have the opposite problem. I love typey birds but I don't show and I like buying new birds too much. I filled my coop with seramas from so many different sources this year, I hardly have room to grow out new ones. ;) But, on that note, here are some pics from my latest hatch. 5 of 6 that went into lockdown hatched, one with assistance (from Aero, my recently deceased rooster).
So fluffy cute!!! They are adorable and.... awesome hatch rate!

super cute!!!! I hope I have babies like that soon.
Have one external pip that just broke through in the past hour, but the others seem to need more time.
Worried about a big storm due to hit this weekend. If it hits we'll most likely be out of power for god knows how long.
we don't have a wood stove yet so might be brooding by body heat :p
plus I have no idea what to do with my younger eggs if the power is out more than a few hours

At times when the power has gone out, I filled up ziplock bags of water as the water heater was still hot... Hot water bags for the incubator, warm water bags for chicks. It worked quite well.

Thank you! I hope you have some soon too!

Here's one idea for at least a shorter term power outage:

Don't know why that posted twice so many hours apart.

So the EE that piped and started zip yesterday, passed in the night. Don't know what the problem was it did not appear to be shrink wrapped and humidity seemed good. All was looking on track when I went to bed.

I candled the other eggs quick while I put a fresh wet sponge in just in case humidity was the issue. Two of the serama appear to have quit. I only have one serama egg left from this set, but it has internally pipped and so have 3 of the EE's. Hope to have little chicks soon.

Oh no! I am sorry. :hugs.

Sometimes this late eggs can look like they have quit but actually are preparing hatch?! This reminds me to go check my eggs.

I am still hopeful for your other eggs!! Come on chickies!

the EE that passed last night had a ruptured yolk. So far I have 1 serama, 3 EE and one mix that have externally pipped. waiting on one more EE to pip, but I don't think the other serama made it.

Oh no, I'm so sorry. :( That's such a bummer.

What do you keep your humidity at during this last part of the hatch? Just asking since you mentioned it being a possible concern. I run mine on the higher end of things, 65 RH this most recent hatch, and that seems to work well. I've also run it as high as 70 RH and had a good hatch with that.

I usually try for 65-70% It dropped down below 50% at one point today. I think having the heat on is sucking the moisture out of the air. I've got humidity back up, but my earlier pips are shrink wrapped
