So, I have had about 8 or so hatches with the eggs laying on their sides, using a hovabator, fyi. Every hatch has been exactly 21 days, with a couple chicks actually hatching into the 22nd. Ratio has been approx 80 % good, 95 % chicks survival and thriving. 2 with bad leg syndrome, one made i, one didnt (actually, one that went 22 days had a weird leg issue and was very weak, but she is a fighter and now cant tell which one she was:)
I decided to try the egg carton method and I put 8 eggs in yesterday, with 8 more scheduled for today. Within HOURS of setting them in lockdown, on day 18, 2 had large pips, and this am, one is almost hatched out and more are pipping.
So thats my Serama in a carton story! I ll post the end results. Of course, now I have the problem of putting in the next batch today, which I have not had a problem before with adding eggs the 2nd day, there's never been a pip this early!

So, from the first batch, all but one hatched on day 19 and 20 in the carton. I will wait and see for the last one, because today is 21. Same thing with the next batch I put in yesterdy, all are pipping! Two concerns with the carton; one hatched so extremely wet, I dont think she was quite "done" seems to be ok today tho. And, once the serama chick gets the top off< they cant seem to get the bottom off< in the carton. So< I have had to take them out and put on their side to finish. Oh! And our first Ruen duck hatched!!!

I started using the carton for incubating/hatching a few hatches ago and definitely see an improvement. Having that chick hatch a little wet is most likely due to excessive humidity during incubation (I've found that people tend to overdo it with humidity when it comes to seramas.) I have never had a problem with my serama chicks getting out of their eggs once they zip the top off. They just jump right out (and will usually jump right back in a few hours later for a nap!) Were you sure you gave them enough time to get out?
