So I have a pair of Serama chickens, a hen and a rooster (Gomez and Morticia). They have a pen indoors because there's too much wildlife around for them to be safe outside unsupervised. Up until this past winter, Morticia would lay a little egg about once a week. Over Xmas I had some family issues and wasn't as vigilant, and she managed to hide an egg from me. When I candled it, it was definitely fertile and since she was brooding, I left it with her. It was about a week along when I found it, and it was doing fine and growing for the next two weeks.
Then I did something stupid.
I'd gotten a bigger cage for Xmas, and I moved them into it. In retrospect I should have just left them until the chick hatched. Morticia stopped brooding and I couldn't find an incubator in time; the egg didn't make it. I feel very guilty about this.
What's worse is, she hasn't laid an egg since. She isn't egg-bound, she's perfectly healthy. Eating the same food, getting exercise, cage is near a window and they go outside regularly under supervision. She's only a year and a half old so I don't think she's too old.
Does anyone have suggestions? I've never had Seramas before.
