Hey all! I bought four pair of young Serama about two months ago or so, four pullet and four cockerel. When I got them, they had this gross smell to them and their poop stinks something awful. I thought maybe it was the food they were being fed or dirty housing and it would dissipate after some tlc. But it still lingers. They smell and their poop is horrible, way worse than normal chicken poop.

I’m going to have a spa day and give them all a good bath before the weather starts getting cold. But my boyfriend said maybe they have some worms or a parasite and maybe I should treat with ivermectin. I haven’t found a similar thread or post so I figured before acting, I’d look for advice.

All behavior is normal, they don’t seem sick or anything wrong at all. All advice welcome! TIA.

Do you have a vet who will run a fecal float on some fresh droppings to look for worms or coccidia, other parasite? Call ahead and collect them in a clean freezer bag. You can try some probiotics for a few days and then a couple of days a week. What are you feeding them?

I mean, I’ve never considered bringing anything regarding my chickens to the vet, but I guess I could call the vet we bring our dogs to just to see how much it would cost.

So I’ve been giving them rooster booster in their water for most of the summer to help with electrolytes and it also has probiotics in. Would you suggest added probiotics on top of that? I have some capsules, plus empty capsules I could make smaller doses for them.

I feed them a local non-GMO crumble. And I also feed them a fancy bird seed mix about once a week that has bulgur wheat, barley, quinoa, peanuts, peas, sunflower seed and dried fruit. Plus, they get fresh fruit and vegetable waste from our garden/kitchen. I feel like overall, we give them a balanced diet, no GMOs and I would think by now they should smell better.

Today is spa day/ I’m going to deep clean and pressure wash their coop so we’ll see how that goes. I haven’t seen any mites on them but haven’t checked every one or every inch so we’ll see if anything comes out in the bath. I’ll probably put some tea tree, clove and peppermint oil in the bath water and we’ll see what it kills if anything.
