The root stalk looks like it has been severed at an angle...do you have voles or gophers in the garden?

The top of the plant can be salvaged... cut out the side shoots and the black end of the stalk. Dust the end of the stalk with Roottone or a rooting medium and then bury the remaining stalk deep in the soil. Keep it moist and it should root for you and bear fruit later.

Voles/moles maybe, but no gophers the garden is fenced and there is no digging around the fence.

Voles have a tendancy to chew off plants at the roots. They are terrible in a sweet potatoe patch! And the little buggers are fast!

Anyone here plant "Peaches and Cream" corn? Bought some at our local farmers market and plan on cooking a few ears tomorrow night.

not happy...... something ate all the carrots in the garden. i had planted a few about 15 .......all gone. didnt leave any trace or anything. the garden is fenced in.

No trace.....any Footprints?
Gophers pull carrots and tops down in their tunnel...but wouldn't eat all of them.
Voles and rabbits eat from the top down so there would be part of a carrot in the ground they couldn't get to since they don't dig roots.
No carrots left at all.....hmmmmm....sounds like a two-legged carrot thief.
